Why Compost is the Best Investment for Your Garden

Compost: Your garden’s one true love

The service of composting can be thrown around in the garden services industry as an optional or unnecessary procedure but we see composting as a vital and essential service in every garden. This blog explains the procedure, benefits, and best timing for composting your garden beds.

The Process of Compost Making and Installation:

Compost is made using garden materials like green leaves and branches that are cut off during a garden prune. Dried leaves and other dried materials are also vital to the process. Another important ingredient is manure because it contains nitrogen which helps to break down the other compost ingredients. Large compost-making companies may use other ingredients and in differing proportions but the above-mentioned ingredients are the basic requirements that we have identified. The process involves adding oxygen, by turning the compost heap, and moisture by watering the pile as required.

Good compost is moist and grainy with fibers in it; it will be warm as well as have all the good bacteria necessary. The anaerobic process produces the warmth, creating a suitable environment for the bacteria, and a sweet smell. If your compost heap gives off a rotting stench then something is wrong.

When Eco Balance arrives at your garden to compost it, the procedure is as follows: we open all the bags and spread it over the soil to make sure it’s evenly distributed in your garden (we cater for small, medium, and large gardens), we spend the rest of the visit turning the compost into the garden soil already present. This mixes the compost in your garden beds and allows the plants as well as the soil to benefit profusely.

Benefits of Compost:

Using compost aids in soil quality control by adding enriching nutrients and helping to retain the soil moisture. It also gives the soil some extra help to stop any pests and diseases from thriving in it. Compost also gives your garden a green stamp; you have successfully reduced the amount of chemical fertilizers that you might want to use, although Eco Balance only uses high-quality organic fertilizer, as well as reducing the natural waste that could, unfortunately, end up in a landfill.

The plants in your garden will benefit from the added nutrients and organic matter in the compost so you are sure to see new plant growth soon after a composting installation. Plants will also love the extra moisture in their soil, as a home or business park owner- you will too because it means that you can water your garden less as the soil retains more moisture. It’s a win, win situation.

When is the best time to compost:

Now, timing-wise, it is approaching the time for summer garden feeding. From September through to January is the best time to feed your garden. Summer garden feeding is comprised out of 3 facets- organic fertilizer, composting, and lawn top dressing. Many Homeowners enjoy getting the full bouquet, which includes all 3 services, but others also enjoy choosing the most prominent need for their garden.  Compost, unlike fertilizer, can be added at any time, come rain or shine. Applying compost after a rain or quick water eases the process as it makes combining and turning the soil unchallenging as the soil is moist and soft.

As a home or business park owner, Eco Balance encourages you to think about your soil health and your plant’s well-being. Your garden is an investment and it adds value to your property, for something that does so much for you maybe it’s time to do something for it- like adding compost and feeding your plants.
